£1k donation for community hall
BURNHAM-On-Sea's Mayor has handed over a cheque for £1,000 to the town's community centre this week. We were first to report last month that the community centre in Berrow Road had been awarded a huge £135,000 grant from environmental company Viridor, but it needed donations to secure the funding.
Former PCSO thanked by Mayor
BURNHAM-On-Sea and Highbridge's Mayor has this week thanked former PCSO Gill Bawler for her "valuable work" in the two towns as she moves on to a new job. Gill was presented with a bouquet of flowers on behalf of the council by Cllr Michael Clarke on Monday (June 7th).
Residents call for golf re-think
A CONCERNED group of Burnham-On-Sea residents has this week called on town councillors to withdraw their support of controversial plans for a new mini golf course on the town's seafront. We reported last week how the proposed course on a grassy area of the South Esplanade had been approved by the council's planning applications committee.
Pensioner escapes bungalow fire

Classic car run raises £1,500
DOZENS of vintage vehicles visited Burnham-On-Sea's seafront on Saturday evening (June 5th), raising £1,500 for charity. Almost 120 police cars, fire engines and valuable old cars and motorbikes took part in the colourful 17th Vale of Avalon Vintage Vehicle Road Run, which rolled into Burnham at 6.30pm.
330 complete Burnham triathlon
OVER 330 athletes from across the country completed Burnham-On-Sea's grueling annual triathlon on Sunday morning (June 6th). The event, now in its 24th year, was staged in brilliant sunshine and was watched by spectators along the route. Iain Hindes from North Devon Triathletes won the event.

BURNHAM-On-Sea's Carnival Queen was the special guest at a special silver surfers internet education day in the town on Friday (June 4th). Jessica Rogers was on hand to greet visitors at the BAY Centre in Cassis Close for the annual UK Online event, which this year had the theme of 'Face your on-line fears'.
'Deliberate' 1.30am fire tackled
BURNHAM-On-Sea firefighters were called to extinguish a deliberate blaze in the early hours of Saturday (June 5th). One Burnham fire engine was sent to a block of flats next to the Lighthouse pub in Highbridge Road at 1.30am after a pile of furniture was set alight.
Explosive scare on Brean beach
Exclusive: PART of Brean beach was sealed off by police and Burnham Coastguards on Saturday afternoon (June 5th) after a metal detector enthusiast came across a possible explosive device underneath the sand. Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards and police were called to the main beach car parking area at 1.50pm.

120 classic cars head to town
OVER 120 vintage vehicles will be hitting Burnham-On-Sea's seafront this evening (Saturday, June 5th). The 17th Vale of Avalon Vintage Vehicle Road Run will arrive at 6.30pm on the town's seafront and the vehicles will then be in Burnham until approximately 7.45pm after judging takes place.
Trio in 1,000 charity cycle ride
Exclusive: Three intrepid Burnham-On-Sea cyclists are in training to pedal their way from Land's End to John O'Groats next month. Martin Rogers, Kevin Crenol and Jason Emmett are hoping to complete the 1,000 mile fundraising ride in just seven days. They will begin their journey from Land’s End in Cornwall on July 3rd.
Berrow May Fayre this Saturday
BERROW'S rescheduled village fayre will take place this Saturday (June 5th) after heavy winds caused the event's postponement last month. High winds damaged marquees and tents on the village's playing field on Saturday, as reported here, leaving them strewn in trees and hedges.
Motorist held for drink driving
Exclusive: A MOTORIST has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving following an accident involving this car in Highbridge. Police were called to the A38, near the entrance to Highbridge Caravans, after this vehicle was reported to have struck another car and been driven eratically.
Fire crews free stuck cyclist
BURNHAM-On-Sea's fire crews carried out one of their more bizarre rescues this afternoon (Thursday, June 3rd) when a child became stuck on her bicycle. Two fire crews were called to Berrow beach at 4.23pm after a 999 call was made regarding the distressed youngster.
Bidder pulls out of Princess race
Exclusive: THE number of bidders in the race to take over Burnham-On-Sea’s Princess Hall has been reduced to three after one group dropped out during the latest round of the district council's competitive tender process. One of the four groups has decided not to continue in the process.
Seafront golf course 'thumbs-up'
Exclusive: CONTROVERSIAL plans to build a new mini golf course on Burnham's seafront were approved by town councillors on Wednesday evening (June 2nd). Entrepreneur Paul Chatwin wants to turn a grassy area on the South Esplanade into a purpose-built golf park over the next year.

HUNDREDS of pounds was raised for the charity Cots For Tots when generous members of Burnham-On-Sea's Inner Wheel Club held a fundraising ploughman's lunch on Wednesday (June 2nd). The event was held at Burnham Baptist Church in College Street over the course if two hours.
Awards for air training duo
TWO members of the Air Training Corps based in Burnham-On-Sea have this week been rewarded for their dedication and commitment to the group. Adult Warrant Officer Steve Warr, who joined as a cadet in 1990, was handed his long service medal for 12 years of superb service at the group.

Seafront fire drama was just a drill
AT first glance it looked like fire crews were attending a major incident on Burnham's seafront this evening (Wednesday, June 2nd). However, local residents were relieved to discover that the five vehicles and a dozen fire fighters were simply taking part in a drill.
Residents call for action on homes
Exclusive: Concerned council house tenants in Highbridge have launched an online petition calling on the government to give residents more power to demand local councils repair their crumbling homes. A group of residents from the Morland Road estate has launched the petition and also written to the boss of Homes In Sedgemoor.
TV star meets Burnham's Amy
Exclusive: GEORGE Sampson, the winner of the 2008 Britain's Got Talent TV series, met up with a Burnham-On-Sea teenager at the weekend, fulfilling a promise made earlier in the year. The dancer was originally due to attend Amy Stacey's sixteenth birthday in Burnham last January.
Tattoo shop sparks complaints
Exclusive: Almost 30 residents in Highbridge are up in arms over the appearance of a new tattoo shop that has opened next to a busy roundabout in the town. They are unhappy about the painted shopfront of The Devil's Work Tattoo Studio, which has opened in Church Street, next to the busy A38 roundabout.
New £3m pool 'progressing well'
WORK to construct Brean Leisure Park's new £3million swimming pool is progressing well with the building's concrete foundations being laid this week. The first pour of concrete was made last week in preparation for the main building work to begin on the brand new 25 metre swimming pool.
Heave ho! Tug of war success
HUNDREDS of pounds was raised for a local good cause during a fundraising tug-of-war in Brent Knoll, near Burnham-On-Sea, on Bank Holiday Monday (May 31st). Seven teams tried to out-pull each other during the event outside the Brent Knoll Inn while raising funds for Burnham rescue charity BARB.
It's A Knockout at Apex Park
WACKY team challenges were the order of the day when a Highbridge park hosted a comeback of the classic gameshow 'It's A Knockout' at the weekend... without a single TV cameras in sight! Somerset Rural Youth Project organised the annual fun day at Apex Park on Saturday (May 29th).
Nine rescued in mudflats drama
BURNHAM-On-Sea Coastguards helped to rescue a family of nine stuck on mudflats at Uphill on Monday evening (May 31st). A team of five Burnham Coastguards was called to the scene, near the north side of Brean Down, at 5.50pm after the group was spotted over half a mile from shore.
Hannah sets sights on nationals
A BURNHAM-On-Sea youngster has an extra spring in her step this week after winning a regional trampoline competition. Hannah Bird, 11, competed in the South West Regional Grading Competition on Sunday (May 30th) and came away with a trophy. Hannah is a member of Cheddar's High Flyers Trampoline Club.
Plucky Malcolm in 13,000ft jump
A PLUCKY 73-year-old pensioner from Burnham-On-Sea raised over £550 for charity when he completed a second parachute jump on Friday (May 28th). Malcolm Hill leapt out of a plane at 13,000ft after one his friends was refused medical permission to make a jump and he took his place.
Tiny trains attract big crowds!
MODEL railway layouts of all shapes and sizes were on show at an exhibition in Burnham-On-Sea on Saturday (May 29th). Burnham and District Model Railway Club held its annual summer open day at the town's Community Centre in Berrow Road, where its members displayed over a dozen layouts.
Charity tug-of-war this weekend
A BRENT Knoll pub is to hold a fundraising tug-of-war in aid of a Burnham-On-Sea charity this Bank Holiday Monday (May 31st). Teams of six people are being sought for the Brent Knoll Inn's annual tug-of-war competition, which will be held during its four day beer festival over the weekend.

OVER £500 was raised for Burnham-On-Sea's carnival club when a fundraising street party was held in the centre of town on Sunday (May 30th). Burnham's MP, Tessa Munt, was among the crowd of supporters at the event, which took place in Burnham High Street over six hours.
Yacht rescued after mayday call
THIS yacht was rescued by Burnham-On-Sea's lifeboats this evening (Sunday, May 30th) after its skipper made a 'mayday' distress call in the Bristol Channel. Burnham's two lifeboats were launched at 5.25pm to help the 58 year-old skipper after he got into difficulty in strong winds and heavy seas to the south west of Stert Island.
Walkers stride out for charity
FIFTY fundraisers pulled on their walking boots to take part in a charity walk from Burnham-On-Sea to Brean Down on Sunday (May 30th). The weather was breezy, but dry, for the seventh annual Alzheimer's Society walk, which saw energetic residents walking either 15 or 7 miles.
Lifeboat sent to 'struggling' yacht
A BURNHAM-On-Sea lifeboat was launched on Sunday morning (May 30th) amid concern for a yacht in Bridgwater Bay. A walker on Burnham's Esplanade contacted Coastguards after he spotted that the yacht appeared to be struggling during rough seas and strong onshore winds.
Marriage festival opens in town
A THREE day Festival Of Marriage is being held at a Burnham-On-Sea church this weekend. St Andrew's Church is hosting the one-off event, where wedding dresses, cakes and floral displays are on show. Among the items is a 1931 wedding dress, which is in excellent condition.
Pylons drop-in sessions planned
NATIONAL Grid has announced a series of events to give people in the Burnham-On-Sea area more information about controversial plans for a huge power line through Somerset. The energy giant will hold the extra drop-in events in our area during June and July to seek more views.
Street party in town this Sunday
A STREET party will be held in Burnham-On-Sea this weekend to raise funds for the town's carnival club. The event will take place in Burnham's High Street on Sunday evening (May 30th) outside the Somerset and Dorset pub in aid of the town's Hillview Juvenile Carnival Club.
New O2 mast for Burnham in July
Exclusive: MOBILE phone giant O2 has this week said its new phone mast on top of Burnham-On-Sea's Ritz Cinema is set to be installed during July. The Planning Inspectorate gave the proposed mast the go-ahead in 2009 after several years of discussions between O2 and Sedgemoor District Council.
Butcher retires after 50 years
Exclusive: A WELL-known butcher in Burnham-On-Sea hung up his meat cleaver for the final time on Saturday (May 29th) after a 50 year career. Keith Britton, 65, has been a familiar face at the butcher's counter in Burnham's Tesco supermarket for the past 13 years, and previously worked at Palmers in the High Street.
Final goodbye for local farmer
HUNDREDS of mourners crowded into a Highbridge church on Wednesday (May 26th) for the funeral of well-known local farmer Arthur Duckett. 80 year-old Arthur died earlier this month following a short spell in Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton. His coffin was taken to St John's Church on a horse drawn carriage, as pictured.

MORE than 170 pupils from Highbridge's King Alfred School attended an end-of-term prom near Burnham-On-Sea on Friday evening (May 28th). Stretch limousines, Porches and even a jeep were out in force as the Year 11 students arrived in style at Rookery Manor, where the formal Prom Night dance was held.

BURNHAM-On-Sea's newly-elected MP Tessa Munt was in town on Friday (28th May) to record an interview to be broadcast on the Sounds and Voices audio news service. The new Liberal Democrat MP visited the group's studios in the town council buildings in the Old Courthouse in Jaycroft Road.

A COUNTY Councillor from the Burnham-On-Sea area was elected Chairman of Devon & Somerset's Fire & Rescue Authority on Friday (May 28th). Huntspill county councillor Mark Healey, pictured, was chosen during the group's AGM which was held on Friday at Clyst St. George in Exeter.
RNLI warning over illegal parking
Exclusive: TWO motorists in Burnham-On-Sea had their vehicles clamped and were issued with hefty fines on Thursday (May 27th) after leaving their vehicles illegally parked outside the town's lifeboat station. The owners of this van and a car were given fines of more than £100.
New £1.8m housing project opens
A NEW £1.8m, 15-home affordable housing project has been opened at the site of a former Burnham-On-Sea church hall this week. The 14 flats and one house were officially opened at the site of the former St Peter's Hall in Highbridge Road by Raglan Housing Association's Chief Executive, Nick Harris, and Sedgemoor District Council's Chairman, Cllr Jane Moreton.
'Restorative justice' for shooter
THE teenager accused of shooting a boy in the face with a BB gun in a Highbridge park last weekend has been dealt with by means of restorative justice, police said on Thursday (May 27th). The youngster was called into Burnham police station this week where he met his 10 year-old victim.
Mixed views on seafront golf course
CONRTROVERSIAL plans to build a mini golf course on Burnham's seafront have this week been attracting mixed reactions from residents and local businesses. Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported in February how Birmingham entrepreneur Paul Chatwin wants to turn a grassy area of The Esplanade into a large, purpose-built golf park to act as a tourist attraction.
