ORGANISERS of Highbridge's entry into the Britain In Bloom competition were celebrating over the weekend after winning an award in their first year in the contest. A PATCHWORK quilt that has taken eight months to complete by talented members of Burnham-On-Sea's University Of The Third Age is being raffled to raise funds for the town's Community Centre. Eleven members of the U3A Patchwork Group have spent the year completing the piece.

MEMBERS of Highbridge's Dreamscheme youth group will be helping wash cars when the town's fire brigade hold their annual charity car wash this Saturday (19th September). The youngsters will be working alongside the fire team between 10am and 2pm to get vehicles cleaned.

VILLAGERS in Berrow are to hold another two protest marches as part of their long-running campaign to get a pavement introduced along Coast Road. Berrow's Local Action Team has announced protests on Saturday 26th September and Saturday 24th October, both starting 11am at Berrow Church.

A NEW 37-mile 400,000 volt overhead pylon line connecting Hinkley Point to a new sub-station in Avonmouth is likely to run through the Burnham-On-Sea area, it was announced on Wednesday (September 16th). The National Grid has been asked to connect the proposed new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point to the sub-station near Bristol.

THE planned merger of two Highbridge schools moved a step closer on Wednesday (September 16th) when the County Council's Cabinet gave its thumbs-up to the plans. Proposals to amalgamate Beechfield Infants School and St John’s Church of England Junior School are being considered by Somerset County Council.

Gymnasts do well in Bulgaria
FOUR members of Burnham-On-Sea's Monarchs gymnastics club travelled to Bulgaria at the weekend to take part in a top competition and came home with armfuls of medals and trophies. Mixed pair Ashley Payne and Katie Hoskins won three silver medals each and there was success for the others too.

BOSSES at Burnham-On-Sea Holiday Village are counting the cost of a fire which has closed the site's fish and chip shop today (Thursday, September 10th). Two fire crews from Burnham were called to the park in Marine Drive at 4.55pm after reports that the Foodworks chip shop was on fire.
BOSSES at Burnham-On-Sea Holiday Village are counting the cost of a fire which has closed the site's fish and chip shop today (Thursday, September 10th). Two fire crews from Burnham were called to the park in Marine Drive at 4.55pm after reports that the Foodworks chip shop was on fire.

Members of the Highbridge and Burnham Carnival Association met on Wednesday (September 9th), having received the bill.

IMAGINATIVE staff at a Burnham-On-Sea tyre centre have turned an exhaust, a set of tyres and a pressure pump into a colourful flower display! The team at GH Tyres in Adam Street have put together this unique display which will be assessed by judges during this year's Burnham In Bloom competition.

Highbridge group meets tonight
HIGHBRIDGE'S Local Action Team is holding a public meeting today (Thursday 10th September) when a variety of local community topics will be discussed. The meeting will be held in Morland Youth Club in Pearce Drive, with doors opening at 7pm for tea and biscuits, and the meeting following at 7.30pm.

Village hall expansion approved
Exclusive: DISTRICT planners have this week given the go-ahead for the extension of Berrow's Village Hall. Berrow Community Association, which oversees the building in Parsonage Road, had applied for full planning permission to develop the property. Its application for the construction of a new extension to the south and east.
