MP's letter to Lord Mandelson
BURNHAM's MP, David Heathcoat-Amory, has this week written to Lord Mandelson stating his anger at the withdrawal of funding by the South West Regional Development Agency for the town's regeneration project. He has asked Peter Mandelson to re-consider the decision.
Swarms of bees land on beach
Exclusive: SEVERAL large swarms of bees descended on parts of Berrow beach on Saturday (June 13th), sending holidaymakers scurrying for cover. Beach wardens called on the help of a bee keeper from Burnham-On-Sea, pictured above, to remove the insects, which buzzed around cars and landed on parasols.

MORE than 40 colourfully dressed walkers strode out for charity when Burnham-On-Sea's annual Smile Walk took place on Sunday (June 14th). The fancy dress walk started by the town's jetty and the walkers then made their way along The Esplanade, passing the Sailing Club .
MBE for school secretary
A FORMER school secretary from Highbridge has been awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours, announced on Saturday (June 13th). Elizabeth Hughes, who was secretary of Beechfield Infant School in Highbridge, has been chosen for the award to mark her services to education.

LARGE crowds flocked to Brent Knoll's annual fete on Saturday afternoon (June 13th). The event, held on the playing field besides the village hall, was opened by Mike Simmonds, the village's former past master at the post office on Brent Corner. Sooty entertains Brean families
CROWDS of children and their fanilies flocked to Brean on Saturday afternoon (June 13th) to enjoy a special performance by TV's Sooty and friends. Richard Cadell from Childrens ITV performed two free live shows with Sooty, Sweep and Soo at Brean Leisure Park in front of several hundred spectators.
Motorist sentenced after crash
A 44-year-old motorist who crashed a BMW through the wall of a Burnham-On-Sea home in an early morning accident has this week been given a two-year suspended jail term. Burnham-On-Sea.com reported in May how Patrick Caulton, from Bridgwater, had been arrested after careering off Marine Drive at speed.
BURNHAM-On-Sea's Lighthouse Arts Group has this week started its annual exhibition of colourful paintings at a gallery in the town. KIDS TV stars Sooty and Sweep will be performing a free show in Brean this Saturday (June 13th). Richard Cadell from Childrens ITV, pictured, will be performing a show at 1pm in front of a crowd at Brean Leisure Park. The event will be free and open to all throughout the afternoon.
Woman injured on seafront
A YOUNG woman was rushed to hospital with head injuries on Thursday morning (June 11th) after a seafront accident involving a car and a pedestrian. A large area of The Esplanade, near the top of Cross Street, was closed to traffic as police began their investigation into what happened.

New road set to be surfaced
WORK to surface Burnham-On-Sea's Frank Foley Parkway is going ahead this week in readiness for the scheduled opening of the road later this month. Work to build the missing link, between Love Lane and Pepperall Road, got underway in March and is on track to be completed in June.

Swimmers spark alarm
A walker's concern for two people in the sea at Brean on Sunday evening (May 31st) sparked an emergency call-out for Burnham-On-Sea's marine rescue teams. Coastguards, a lifeboat, and a hovercraft were called to Brean at 8.50pm after the pair were seen almost half a mile out from the shore.

A HUGE crowd of more than 2,000 people watched a sparkling fireworks display at Brean on Saturday night (May 30th). The display, captured here on video, took place at the village's Leisure Park and raised hundreds of pounds for several local charities, including hovercraft group BARB.
Church celebrates 150th year
ST John's Church in Highbridge is to celebrate the 150th year since its consecration with a week of events to mark the milestone. The celebrations will begin on Monday June 15th and will include free concerts, slide shows and religious services. An open-air service will also be held at Apex Park.

THE first main line steam engine to be built in Britain for 50 years steamed through Highbridge on Saturday (May 30th). The Tornado locomotive visited the West Country for the first time, with its £3m engine hauling several Severn Coast Express excursion carriages behind it.
Fire crews tackle dunes blaze
THESE were the scenes on Brean beach on Saturday evening (May 30th) as Burnham-On-Sea fire crews tackled a blaze in the sand dunes. A barbecue that had been lit on the edge of the dunes, close to the Seagull Inn, set 20 square metres of grass on fire. Two fire engines rushed to the scene.

Exclusive: BEACH wardens have issued a safety warning to dog owners after a pet plunged to its death from Brean Down on Saturday morning (May 30th). Brean beach warden Pete Williams was called to the foot of the Down at 11am after a Staffordshire Bull Terrier fell down the cliffs close to Brean Cove.
Two arrests in drugs operation
BURNHAM-On-Sea police have this week arrested two men on drugs possession offences and searched 20 others during an ongoing crackdown against drugs use in the town. A specialised drug testing machine was used at Michaels Bar on Burnham seafront, as pictured, to undertake random testing.
Brean fireworks preview
A SPARKLING fireworks display will take place above Brean on Saturday night (May 30th) when the village's Leisure Park holds the second of four free events. The display will get started at 9.30pm, giving visitors an opportunity to enjoy the fun park rides before the display begins.

Exclusive: THE body of a middle-aged man found washed up in a river estuary near Burnham-On-Sea earlier this week came from Gloucestershire, learns Burnham-On-Sea.com. West Somerset Coroner Michael Rose told Burnham-On-Sea.com on Thursday (May 28th): "We are certain the body is not a local person."

Chris Jagger comes to Burnham
HIGHLY acclaimed musician and song writer Chris Jagger will be performing at Burnham-On-Sea's Princess Theatre next month. The brother of Mick Jagger, who is an artist in his own right, will be in town on Saturday 6th June for the first of a series of concerts over the summer.
Car park closure 'is temporary'
SUPERMARKET giant Morrisons has this week reassured motorists that a busy seafront car park in Burnham-On-Sea will only close temporarily while work is carried out. A large section of the Pier Street car park was cordoned off throughout Tuesday (May 26th), with bollards preventing access to approximately 200 spaces.
Nightmare day for lorry driver
THIS was the dramatic scene in Highbridge on Tuesday afternoon (May 26th) as emergency crews dealt with a bizarre lorry accident. Burnham-On-Sea fire crews, paramedics and police were called to Worston Road at 3pm after the accident left the shocked driver stuck in his cab.
Body found in river estuary
THIS was the scene at Burnham-On-Sea Sailing Club this evening (Monday May 25th) after a body was found in the nearby river. Police, paramedics and two Burnham lifeboats are at the scene after a body was spotted near the mouths of the River Brue and the River Parrett. Fire crew helps trapped horse
BURNHAM-On-Sea and Weston fire crews helped to pull a stranded horse out of a ditch in Brent Knoll on Sunday afternoon (May 24th). A BIG rescue attempt to try and save this stranded vehicle took place on Burnham-On-Sea beach this evening (Sunday May 24th). The van's wheels became stuck in soft sand and mud near the town's jetty at 6.10pm, prompting a call-out for rescue charity BARB.
