The first main line steam engine to be built in Britain for 50 years steamed through Highbridge on Saturday (May 30th).

The Tornado locomotive visited the West Country for the first time, with its £3m engine hauling several Severn Coast Express Excursion carriages.

A crowd of people gathered at Highbridge Railway Station on Saturday afternoon to watch it pass by.

Among them were Burnham-On-Sea.com forum members Rib Eye Steak, Nuuk and TrunkerThree, who posted these superb images of the train on the website.

In February, the 170-tonne Tornado made its first long-distance passenger trip to London and it was later officially named by the Prince of Wales.

In 1990, the Darlington-based charity A1 Steam Locomotive Trust started the campaign to build a new operational steam train for the East Coast line, which resulted in the new engine. It will run on the West Somerset Railway for the first two weeks of June.
