'No plans' to sell court house
BURNHAM and Highbridge Town Council has assured residents this week that 'no plans' are being drawn up to sell its council chambers. A Town Council spokesperson told Burnham-On-Sea.com on Thursday that a discussion had taken place about cost cutting.
Cross-channel ferry plan unveiled
Exclusive: FRESH proposals for a major Bristol Channel ferry service which would visit Burnham-On-Sea have been welcomed this week. Entrepreneur Chris Marrow wants to launch the Severn Link ferry service between Burnham-On-Sea, Minehead, Ilfracombe, Swansea and Penarth.

Exclusive: WESSEX Water has this week admitted that disruptive work to repair a damaged sewer in Burnham-On-Sea is taking 'longer than planned', leading to the ongoing closure of Berrow Road. The firm says there is no date set yet to re-open it, but it will give an update next week.
Beach erosion study starts
BURNHAM-On-Sea residents are being invited to have their say about how the risks of coastal flooding and beach erosion could be better managed. Sedgemoor District Council and the Environment Agency are developing a new 10-year beach management plan.
Duke opens new YMCA centre
SEVERAL Burnham-On-Sea residents were among 200 guests invited to watch the Duke of Kent formally open Bridgwater YMCA’s £6.2million new centre for homeless young people on Wednesday (October 5th). The Duke was given a guided tour of the new facilities.
Mosaic making in Highbridge
A SERIES of glass mosaic making workshops are set to be held in Highbridge during November. The training sessions will be led by an experienced tutor and will be held in Morland Hall in conjunction with Sedgemoor Community Partnership. The events are free of charge to those who qualify.
Club's cushions provide relief
BURNHAM-On-Sea's Inner Wheel Club are continuing to support cancer patients by providing breast cushions to Weston Hospital and the local community. The club has recently completed work on 34 cushions, 24 of which have gone straight to patients at Weston Hospital.
Dog warden issues warning
DOG walkers in Highbridge's Apex Park have this week been warned that additional dog warden patrols are being carried out in response to residents' concerns about the amount of dog poo that is not being picked up. Dog warden Tina Kick will be issuing fines.
Club's yachts targeted by vandals
Exclusive: BURNHAM-On-Sea Sailing Club has increased its security after vandals set a yacht adrift and caused damage to boats and moorings. Police are investigating a series of potentially serious incidents at the club's pontoons in the River Brue, which have occurred over the past three weeks.
Have your say on hotel's future
A PUBLIC meeting is to be held on Wednesday 19th October to discuss the future re-development of the Highbridge Hotel and Market Site. The workshop, which will take place at the Highbridge Community Hall in Market Street, will be held from 4pm – 7pm and all will be welcome.
Harvest celebration at school

Funding blow for town theatre
Exclusive: BURNHAM-On-Sea's Princess Theatre may have to scale back its modernisation programme after being turned down for a crucial grant that would have brought in over £50,000. The Princess Theatre and Arts Centre submitted an application to Viridor Environmental to fund the refurbishment.
Council achieves quality status
BURNHAM-On-Sea and Highbridge Town Council is one of only around a dozen parish and town councils across Somerset to have achieved official quality status. The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) said the council's application has been granted.

OVER 20 yachts were raised into the skies above the River Brue in Burnham-On-Sea early on Sunday (October 2nd) during the annual spectacle winter 'crane-out'. Organisers from Burnham's Yacht Club took advantage of the high tide and calm weather to proceed with the annual tradition.

Metal thieves target youth centre
Exclusive: MEAN thieves have stripped away strips of lead from the roof of Burnham-On-Sea's youth centre. The team who run the busy BAY Centre in Cassis Close made the discovery after finding damp patches in the ceiling of the building. The strips were probably taken for their scrap metal value.
Half marathon beats the heat
270 runners took part in Burnham-On-Sea's annual Half Marathon today (Sunday, October 2nd) despite sweltering weather. Mark Wills from Yeovil won the event in a good time of one hour, 20 minutes and 16 seconds despite heatwave temperatures of 27°C (80.6°F).

THE crew of Burnham-On-Sea's rescue hovercraft were kept busy on Sunday (October 2nd) when the heatwave tempted scores of beach visitors to wade out across the mudflats to reach the sea for a paddle. Coastguards called BARB's Spirit Of Lelaina hovercraft to Uphill at 6pm.
Van overturns on motorway
AN overturned van on the M5 motorway near Burnham-On-Sea caused tailbacks for motorists this morning (Sunday). Two lanes of the southbound carriageway were shut by police at 9.50am between junction 21 at Weston-super-Mare and junction 22 at Burnham.
Sunday market returns today
WEEKLY Sunday markets are set to return to Highbridge's former cattle market site from today (October 2nd) after an absence of over two years. The businessman behind Burnham's car boot sales at the BASC sports ground is re-launching the market besides the site of the former Highbridge Hotel.
Top autograss action today
DIRT will be flying and engines revving when autograss fans from across the country flock to Highbridge today (Sunday) for the annual National Autograss Grand Prix. Large crowds are expected to turn out to watch the action at the Somerset Raceway track next to the Oak Tree Arena.

Hinkley protest march held
MORE than 150 people joined a march on Saturday afternoon (October 1st) to protest against EDF Energy’s plan for two new reactors at Hinkley Point nuclear power station near Burnham-On-Sea. Protesters converged outside EDF's HQ in Bridgwater before marching through the town.
New route for half marathon
OVER 200 runners will take part in Burnham-On-Sea's annual Half Marathon on Sunday (October 2nd), whose route has had to be changed due to roadworks in Berrow Road. Organisers from Burnham Harriers running club are pleased with the number of entries to this year's event.
Weekly bin collections to return?
BURNHAM-On-Sea residents could see weekly collections of general rubbish re-introduced after the government announced on Friday it is making £250m available to help local councils restore the service. Government Communities Secretary Eric Pickles said it is a "basic right" to have a weekly collection.

COFFEE lovers in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge have raised hundreds of pounds for Macmillan Cancer Support by taking part in the ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’. Highbridge's Aga Shop on the Isleport Industrial Estate has raised £200 for the charity during its fundraising coffee morning.
Police issue heatwave warning
POLICE have this week warned householders in the Burnham-On-Sea area that the unseasonably warm weather could provide a window of opportunity for thieves. Opportunistic burglars often look for open windows and unlocked doors during hot weather, prompting the warning.
Hinkley features on BBC show
'BANG Goes the Theory' - the BBC's guide to popular science - will be examining nuclear power following events in Japan earlier this year in the final programme of the current series, which visits Hinkley Point power station near Burnham-On-Sea. The show goes out on Monday.
Coastguards search for boat
BURNHAM-On-Sea Coastguards were involved in an extensive search of the Bristol Channel today (Friday) for a suspected missing boat. Coastguards from Barry in South Wales and Burnham were called out at 3am to search the channel for the vessel, which is thought to have lost power.

Power line route is announced
The route of a controversial power line through Somerset has been announced by energy bosses today (Thursday, September 29th). During a meeting with councillors in Bridgwater this morning, National Grid revealed its preferred route corridor for a 400,000 volt line between Hinkley Point and Avonmouth.

Missing woman found at Brean
A MAJOR search was carried out on Brean Down on Wednesday (September 28th) after a woman in a distressed state was reported missing. Teams of Coastguards from Burnham and Weston joined police and crewmembers from BARB (Burnham Area Rescue Boat) in conducting a three-hour search.

Cyclists boost youth project
TWO boys from Highbridge and Burnham-On-Sea have cycled a 15-mile circuit, visiting 15 churches along their way, to raise money for a local youth project. James Biddiscombe and Thomas Fincham peddled their way around the route in wet weather to raise over £200.
Fire crews called to fuel leak
BURNHAM-On-Sea fire crews were called to Highbridge tonight (Tuesday, September 27th) after residents reported a strong smell of fuel. The crews were called to Pepperall Road at 8pm where they found a parked car had leaked a large amount of petrol onto the roadway.

WORK on Burnham-On-Sea's £360,000 Marine Cove gardens restoration project will still be completed despite the main building contractor overseeing the work going into administration, the district council said today. BURNHAM-On-Sea businessman Scott Woodberry is to scale the mountains of Peru to raise money for a charity close to his heart. Scott, who is director of Woodberry Brothers, will be heading to Machu Picchu on Friday 7th October for a 10-day trek in aid of Weston Hospicecare.
Police name crash victim
POLICE have today (Tuesday) named the victim who was killed in a road traffic collision on the A38 near Burnham-On-Sea on Saturday (September 24th). 27 year-old Alice Hicks from Weston-super-Mare was killed in a two-car collision which occurred in the village of Biddisham.
