MORE than £2,000 has been raised by local groups in Burnham and the surrounding area to help a local man fight cancer. A cheque for £2,090.35 was handed over to the Cancer Research organisation on Saturday by big-hearted supporters who have held a series of events in recent weeks.

DOZENS of local people gathered besides the Frank Foley Statue in Highbridge on Friday to mark World Holocaust Day. Organised by the Highbridge Memorial Trust, the ceremony in Market Street was attended by local dignataries including Burnham and Highbridge Mayor Eric Gill.

Oil spill prompts river clean-up
A BIG clean-up operation is under way on part of the River Brue near Burnham-On-Sea after an estimated 100 gallons of oil spilled into the river. The Environment Agency has been using 60ft booms to contain the oil which appeared to have leaked from a premises in Bason Bridge.

BURNHAM-On-Sea's Tourist Information Centre is to get a new look in time for the 2006 tourist season. Sedgemoor District Council is about to begin a major refurbishment of the seafront building. It opened more than 15 years ago and has received a million visitors in that time.

FIRE-hit Berrow Football Club received a much-needed double financial boost this week when more than £2,000 was raised at a big fundraising concert in Brean and a local brewery began selling a special new beer to raise further cash. The money will go towards replacing lost equipment.

OFFICIAL figures out this week show the number of cargo ships passing Burnham-On-Sea on their way to Dunball and Bridgwater increased by almost ten per cent during 2005. The stats show 85 large vessels passed Burnham-On-sea last year, compared to 79 in 2004.

Two-car accident on seafront
TWO vehicles were badly damaged after colliding in an accident on Burnham's seafront on Sunday evening, January 22nd. Burnham-On-Sea Police were called to The Esplanade, near the Sailing Club, at around 6.10pm after the crash was reported to them. The road was not cleared until 7.15pm.

A YOUNG couple walking in treacherous mud almost a mile from the shore at Brean have been brought back to safety by Burnham's hovercraft. The craft and its crew were training in the area on Saturday January 21st when a member of the public spotted the pair walking to the sea at low tide.

WORKMEN have been busy making final adjustments to Burnham-On-Sea's brand new lifeboat station shop, which is set to be officially opened by BBC TV sports presenter John Inverdale during February. The shop is situated on the seafront next to Sunspot Amusements and will also be open over the school half-term.

FIRE services were alerted on Saturday morning (January 21st) after residents in Burnham-On-Sea reported seeing plumes of 'smoke' over Hinkley Point power station. A tall pillar of 'white smoke' was visible for miles around Bridgwater Bay - but it turned out to be a false alarm when it was put down to harmless steam.

A BURNHAM-On-Sea St John Ambulance Brigade volunteer has been appointed MBE in the Queen's New Year Honours list. Pat Comer, of Rosewood Avenue, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: "I was quite surprised - I had no clues whatsoever!". She will be handed the honour by the Queen during 2006.

A SIX-year-old was rushed to Weston General hospital on Friday night (December 30th) after being hurt in a car accident on the A38 near Burnham-On-Sea. The girl, who was being driven home after a trip to the circus at Sanders Garden World, was treated by paramedics.

A 37-year-old Burnham-On-Sea man has died after apparently falling down the steps in a night-time accident at a High Street night club. Jonathan Cotton of Dyrham Close, Burnham, died after the tragic incident at Shakers Night Club during early December. He is beieved to have died the following day.

Snow sweeps into Burnham
BURNHAM-On-Sea got its heaviest fall of snow for several years on Thursday afternoon, December 29th, when the town was blanketed with a thick covering of the white stuff. Several hours of wintry weather left the town under 2cm of snow - and even the beach was white.
BURNHAM-On-Sea got its heaviest fall of snow for several years on Thursday afternoon, December 29th, when the town was blanketed with a thick covering of the white stuff. Several hours of wintry weather left the town under 2cm of snow - and even the beach was white.
