A Burnham-On-Sea St John Ambulance Brigade volunteer has been appointed MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours list.

Pat Comer, of Rosewood Avenue, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I was quite surprised – I had no clues whatsoever!”

She has spent much of her life volunteering with the organisation and is currently the deputy commander of St John Ambulance in Somerset.

“I have helped St Johns since I was 11, working my way up from overseeing the cubs and cadets in Highbridge and later the adult division, to the county,” she said.

Her family have been behind her every step of the way – her daughter, Sarah, is heavily involved with the Highbridge division and her husband was also a St John member until he retired.

Pat, who is a church warden at Burnham’s St Andrew’s Church, is also closely involved with the Somerset St John Fellowship group, which helps retired ambulance volunteers.

She is looking forwards to taking a trip to Buckingham Palace within the next five months to collect her well-deserved medal.
