Dreamscheme's trick and treat
MEMBERS of Burnham-On-Sea's Dreamscheme delivered sweets and posters to residents across the town on Wednesday (October 26th) to promote their Halloween safety drive. As part of the group's half-term activities, the youngsters knocked on doors to deliver them.
Body discovery 'not suspicious'
BRITISH Transport Police have today (Wednesday) confirmed there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the discovery of a body next to the railway line between Highbridge and Bridgwater. A post mortem confirmed there are no suspicious circumstances.
Four-night comedy underway
FOUR nights of theatrical entertainment from the West Huntspill Players started on Wednesday (October 26th). The group is performing 'Old Actors Never Die.. They Simply Lose The Plot', a farce in two acts by Lynn Brittney in the village's Balliol Hall over the next few nights.
Wind farm dinner announced
TICKETS for a dinner and dance in East Brent to raise funds for the NoPilrow campaign have gone on sale this month. The event will take place on November 18th at Brent House Restaurant and has been organised by members of NoPilrow, the campaign group opposed to the plans.

DOZENS of residents flocked to Highbridge Community Centre on Tuesday (October 25th) when the town's U3A held its annual open day. Visitors were able to try their hand at numerous U3A activities and see a number of displays during the successful five-hour event.

Body found on railway line
Updated: TRAINS through Highbridge Railway Station have been suspended this evening (Tuesday, October 25th) after a body was found on the railway line. Burnham-On-Sea.com understands that the body was found by police two miles north of the town of Bridgwater.
Berrow Road re-opens again
WORK to repair a collapsed sewer in Burnham-On-Sea's Berrow Road was completed on Tuesday (October 25th), allowing the disruptive road closure to be lifted. Wessex Water worked for five weeks to repair it but found the pipe was more severely damaged than first thought.

Free town computer course
BURNHAM-On-Sea Library is running a free, computer training course for residents who you are completely new to the web. The computer course will be held on Friday 4th November from 2:30pm–4:30pm and is designed to teach beginners how to use a PC.
Tessa opposes EU referendum
BURNHAM-On-Sea's MP last night (Monday) voted against a controversial parliamentary motion calling for a referendum on whether the UK should stay in the EU, leave it or renegotiate its membership. Tessa Munt decided to toe her party's line by opposing the motion.
U3A Open Day in town today
HIGHBRIDGE'S community centre is holding an open day today (Tuesday, October 25th) when visitors will be able to try some of the activities that take place there. Highbridge U3A is running the free event from 10am-3pm at the community centre in the town's Market Street.
16 play in tennis tournament
SIXTEEN members of Burnham-On-Sea's Avenue Tennis Club competed in the annual Ron Hines Memorial Trophy at the weekend. The players all played four matches which ended with Head Coach Vinny Duddy, Carey Vohra, Josh Lutner and Pat Hunter in the final.

SOMERSET County Council has this week warned residents in the Burnham-On-Sea area to be on the alert for a letter scam involving 'Euromillion Lottery International'. Somerset Trading Standards has received reports of letters being posted to residents.
£62k boost for town rugby club
Exclusive: BURNHAM-On-Sea's rugby club is set to make £62,000 of improvements to its ground with a brand new grandstand and floodlighting. The club, based at the town's BASC Ground in Stoddens Road, has been given council approval to install the new structures.
Carnival countdown underway

BEES to perform 'Annie Junior'

HOLIDAYMAKERS at a Brean caravan park have this week handed over a bumper cheque to the charity that runs Burnham-On-Sea's rescue hovercrafts. A summer of fundraising at Diamond Farm Holiday Park has raised £2,275 towards the running costs of BARB (Burnham Area Rescue Boat).
Coastguards called to surfer
BURNHAM-On-Sea Coastguards were this afternoon (Sunday) called to help a kitesurfer who was spotted struggling in the sea after losing his surf board in strong winds. Coastguards were called to Burnham beach at pm after an angler dialled 999 to report the surfer was in difficulty.
Mayor opens new extension
BURNHAM-On-Sea's Mayor and Mayoress were the special guests at the opening of a new wing of a Brent Knoll nursing home this week. Michael and Maria Clarke were invited to Holywell Nursing Home in Brent Street to cut a ribbon to mark the official opening ceremony for the facilities.
£30,000 refurb for Brean cafe
Exclusive: THE National Trust is temporarily closing its shop and cafe at Brean Down for a month while it gives the property a £30,000 refurbishment. The well-used facilities at the foot of Brean Down will close from October 30th for a period of around four weeks while the work is undertaken.
Last chance to join beach walk
A FINAL few places are available for East Huntspill wildlife rescue charity Secret World's fundraising beach walk, run or cycle ride between Burnham-On-Sea and Brean on Sunday October 30th. Called the 'Brean 14', the event involves a 14km run, a 6km walk or bike ride.
Geography award for school
THE geography department at Highbridge's King Alfred School has been awarded the status of a 'Centre of Excellence' by the Geographical Association - becoming one of only a handful of schools to achieve the award in the whole south west region of the country.

Power cut hits 385 homes
A POWER cut left over 380 homes in the West Huntspill area briefly without electricity this evening (Thursday, October 20th). Supplies went off shortly after 7pm and the cut lasted approximately ten minutes, according to Western Power Distribution.
Highbridge fun fair underway
A THREE-day fun fair is this week being held at Highbridge's former market site. The fair opened on Thursday (October 20th) and runs until Saturday (October 22nd). Its traditional rides are open from 6pm each evening and from 2pm on Saturday. The fair first visited the site last year.
Safety calls after two-car crash
Exclusive: FRESH calls have been made for safety to be improved at a busy road junction near Burnham-On-Sea after an accident in which a teenager was rushed to hospital on Thursday (October 20th). Police and two ambulances were called to the junction of Burnham Moor Lane and the A38 shortly after 8.30am.

Man arrested over A38 death
A MAN has this week been arrested in connection with a woman's death in a crash near Burnham-On-Sea last month. Alice Hicks, 27, was involved in a collision with another vehicle on the busy A38 route through Rooksbridge on September 24th. She died later that day.

Black belt for karate expert
A BURNHAM-On-Sea karate enthusiast has high-kicked his way to achieve the status of 4th Dan Black Belt. Matthew Smith, 25, from Burnham and Highbridge Karate Club, took the test for his 4th Dan Black Belt at King Alfred Sports Centre in Highbridge over recent days.
Three arrests as drugs seized
POLICE arrested three people and seized hundreds of pounds worth of drugs in Highbridge on Tuesday (October 18th). Officers from Burnham-On-Sea Police Station executed a drugs warrant in Kings Street where a 30-year-old man was arrested after cannabis was revcovered.
Steve finishes his final walk
WELL-known Highbridge fundraiser Steve Fear has raised a mammoth £40,000 from his final mammoth walk in aid of Meningitis UK. Steve, 58, has hiked over 9,000 miles since 1994 in memory of his niece Sophie Deacon, who died aged just 16 from meningitis in 1993.
Man jailed after police struggle
A BURNHAM-On-Sea man who pleaded guilty to two offences of assault with intent to resist arrest and criminal damage has been jailed. Shane Anthony Ponting, 32, from Winchester Road, pleaded guilty to the offences and was sentenced to 49 day's jail by Taunton magistrates.
Hinkley shutdown underway
EDF Energy's Hinkley Point B power station near Burnham-On-Sea has this week begun the site's planned maintenance shutdown on one of its two reactors. The shutdown of reactor 4 will see around 1,000 extra people on site and an investment of more than £35m.
