Burnham-On-Sea’s Coastguards and lifeboats were called to Brean Down on Wednesday (February 8th) amid concern for two people who appeared to be cut off by the incoming tide.

The teams were paged just before 4pm to assist two people on the southern side of Brean Down.

Coastguard Station Officer Dave Welland spoke to the person who had raised the alarm and spotted the location of the two people.

“Both persons were in view and at the base of the Down for sometime while the rescue units were en-route,” said a spokesman.

“Just a few moments before our arrival one started to climb the side of the Down and after a short time it became apparent they were actually climbers. Often they will walk out during low tide and climb the Down while the tide is in, and then safely make their way back once it has receded.”

“As they were both at the base with their equipment out of view it was not obvious they were climbers and was easy to think they were cut off.”

“The first informant was apologetic and thought she’d wasted our time, but in fact she had made made the right call. Please don’t feel that you shouldn’t call it in as it’s better to be called and not needed than called too late.”

“The RNLI lifeboats did a quick search of the South side of the Down to ensure there was no-one else, and stood down and returned to Burnham.”
