July switch-on for Burnham’s £30,000 seafront lights

Illuminations along Burnham’s Esplanade will be switched on in July, according to the town councillor leading the project.

Some 27 lights between the Reed’s Arms and St Andrew’s Church will initially be switched on, said Cllr Neville Jones, with a further 16 between the town’s jetty and Yacht Club following at a later date.

it comes after Burnham and Highbridge Town Council’s town improvements committee voted to go-ahead with the illuminations after it was revealed that it was going to cost £55.90 a week just to store the lights.

Cllr Neville Jones said the £30,000 lights could be installed on 27 of the 43 lamp posts.

The committee has decided to put up the lights on the lamp posts which are safe, once they have received a written agreement from the county council.

In April, the county council withdrew permission, after finding that 16 posts did not meet safety standards.
