Lucky escape for elderly motorist
AN elderly motorist was treated for shock after this accident in Brent Knoll on Monday morning (July 20th). Public police meetings this week
RESIDENTS in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge will be able to have their say about policing at two public meetings this week. Burnham's PACT (Partners and Communities Together) meeting will be held on Thursday July 23rd at 7.30pm in the Town Council Chambers and Highbridge's on Tuesday evening.

AN outbreak of a sickness bug at a Burnham-On-Sea school is being brought under control, with just a dozen pupils still away on Monday morning (July 20th). A DEAL between several local councils and a nuclear energy firm to process plans for two new nuclear reactors at Hinkley Point, near Burnham-On-Sea, has led to fears that it will by-pass the democratic process. Campaigners from the Stop Hinkley group say there is a "clear conflict of interest".

A VICTORIAN-themed circus show has arrived at Brean Leisure Park, near Burnham-On-Sea, and is set to entertain holidaymakers throughout the summer season. The Voltini Sideshow is taking place in a darkened Victorian-style tent near the entrance to the leisure park.
Fashion show raises RNLI cash
A FUNDRAISING fashion s how held at Brean on Wednesday (July 15th) to raise money for Burnham-On-Sea RNLI raised more than £300. The event included entertainment from Burnham’s Wrinkly Rappers and comedian Jim Darch. There were several fashion parades from local retailers.
Lifeboat helps pair in river
In video: A Burnham-On-Sea lifeboat crew was launched on Saturday afternoon (July 18th) to help two sailors in difficulty in the River Brue. The Staines Whitfield lifeboat was launched at 4pm from the jetty to assist a yacht that had run aground on the muddy banks of the river estuary near to Highbridge's sewer works.
Kids centre celebrates five years
POOR weather failed to dampen spirits at Highbridge Children's Centre on Friday (July 17th), which celebrated its fifth anniversary with a busy day of activities. Staff, parents and children flocked to the centre in Coronation Road for the special event, held throughout the day at the centre.
Fire scare at Burnham bank
BURNHAM-On-Sea fire crews rushed to a town centre bank on Friday afternoon (July 17th) after staff reported a smell of burning. Two fire engines were sent to Nat West Bank in Regent Street to investigate shortly after 4pm, as pictured here. No sign of a fire was found during the incident.
Burnham ready for Bloom judges

Norovirus outbreak hits Burnham school
Exclusive: ALMOST 50 pupils at a Burnham-On-Sea school have been struck down by the Norovirus sickness bug. The headteacher of Burnham Infants School, Andrew Marsh, told Burnham-On-Sea.com on Thursday morning (July 16th): "I can confirm that 48 of our 210 pupils have caught Norovirus and are not at school today."
Family Fun Day this Saturday
A DAY of non-stop fun is promised by Burnham-On-Sea Lions Club when the group holds its annual Family Fun Day on the town's seafront this Saturday (July 18th). Fire crews called to kitchen blaze
FIRE crews from Burnham-On-Sea attended a kitchen fire in Watchfield, near Highbridge, on Thursday morning (July 16th). On their arrival, the fire appeared to be out, but after further investigation the crews found there were still hot spots from within an oil-fuelled Aga.
Fears for community group's future

New exhibition opens at gallery
AN EXHIBITION of colourful paintings by Burnham-On-Sea artist Peter Howe has opened in the town this week. The display of artwork is open each day at Sea Breeze gallery in Victoria Street until Saturday August 1st. Somerset-born Peter has had many paintings exhibited across the world.
Drop-in sessions start in town
THE first of a series of weekly 'community drop-in sessions' is being held at Highbridge's police pod on Tuesday (July 14th). The centre, which is located in the Asda car park, will be open every Tuesday from 10am-2pm, when it will be manned by volunteers from Highbridge's LAT and local PCSOs.
MP at special regeneration meeting
MEMBERS of Burnham-On-Sea's Chamber of Trade met MP David Heathcoat-Amory at a special meeting in the town over the weekend to discuss how to take forward plans for regeneration. It follows the recent decision by the South West Regional Development Agency not to award £750,000 of vital funding to the project.

Stricken sailor swims to Down
A SAILOR who fell overboard into the Bristol Channel from his trimaran managed to swim to Brean Down on Saturday (July 11th) where he was rescued by a team of Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards. The sailor, from Weston, had set sail alone from Uphill on Saturday morning, but had got into dificulty in Weston Bay.
Park concert draws big crowd
WARM summer weather and a great line-up of musicians attracted a big crowd to Burnham-On-Sea's Manor Gardens on Sunday afternoon (July 12th). The 12th annual Picnic In the Park was headlined by the highly-acclaimed Blues band ZZ Birmingham. They belted out almost an hour of top music.

Dreamscheme tidy-up in town
YOUNG members of Highbridge's Dreamscheme launched a big clean-up operation in the town to ensure it was tidy before the visit of judges from the Britain In Bloom competition. The enthusiastic group of 20 children and their leaders collected several sackfuls of rubbish from around the town.
Dog walker injured in beach fall
THESE were the scenes on Burnham-On-Sea beach on Saturday morning (July 11th) when Coastguards came to the rescue of a lady who had suffered a suspected broken leg in a fall. A team of Burnham Coastguards carried the middle-aged woman on a stretcher to a waiting ambulance after she fell near Maddock's Slade.
New bistro opened in Burnham
A BRAND new bistro and coffee house opened in Burnham-On-Sea on Saturday (July 11th). Yorkshire couple Sam and Steven Crowden have taken over the lease of the former French's Cafe in College Street, which shut down at the end of 2008. They officially opened on Saturday.
Third case of Swine Flu emerges
Exclusive: THE parent of a Berrow Primary School pupil has become the latest person in the Burnham-On-Sea area to be affected by Swine Flu, it emerged on Friday (July 10th). The father has been struck with a suspected case of the bug, and his child is not attending the school as a precaution.

Fire false alarm at Morrisons
A FIRE alert at Burnham-On-Sea's newly-opened Morrisons supermarket on Thursday afternoon (July 9th) turned out to be a lot of hot air! A Burnham fire engine was sent to the new Pier Street store at 1.05pm after its alarms were activated - but it later emerged that a bakery oven had caused the alert.
Thieves target parking machines
Exclusive: THIEVES have attacked several parking payment machines along Burnham seafront this week, stealing money from inside and causing hundreds of pounds of damage. Several of the solar-powered machines along the North Esplanade have been attacked and coins taken from inside.
Nick appointed Mayor's cadet
BURNHAM-On-Sea's Mayor has this week formally welcomed his official new cadet for the coming year. Cllr Derick Cooper named Burnham Scout Nick Jones during this week's town council meeting and congratulated him on his new position, which he got after an interview.
Princess drinks licence approved
Exclusive: BURNHAM town councillors have this week reversed their decision to disallow the town's Princess Hall to sell alcohol until midnight every day and on special occasions until 2am. Members of the council's Planning Committee had rejected the plan, but the full council has overturned the decision.
Search for carnival queen starts
THE search is on to find his year's Burnham-On-Sea Carnival Queen and two Princesses. The successful entrants will lead the Burnham and Highbridge Carnival Procession on Monday 9th November and also present awards to the winners on the annual carnival presentation night later in the year.
Second case of Swine Flu reported
A PUPIL at King Alfred School in Highbridge was named as the second person in the Burnham area to be suffering from suspected Swine Flu on Wednesday (July 8th). Head teacher Keith Diffey told Burnham-On-Sea.com that a girl in Year 8 of the school had been diagnosed with Swine flu.
Fashion show for lifeboat charity
BURNHAM-On-Sea lifeboat supporters will be able to support the life-saving charity at a fashion show in Brean on Wednesday July 15th. The event, to be held at Brean Leisure Centre, will include a raffle and entertainment from Burnham-On-Sea's very own Wrinkly Rappers.
£80,000 book boost for charity
BLIND and visually-impaired children are to benefit from an £80,000 modernisation of a book production department at a charity based in Highbridge. The revamped, digitalised 'CustomEyes' equipment has expanded at the National Blind Children's Society and was unveiled at a special ceremony.
Group raises £750 for helicopter
MEMBERS of Burnham-On-Sea's Moose International Lodge 123 and The Julie Bowden School of Dancing have handed over £750 to Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance following a fundraising event. Members of the Burnham lodge visited the headquarters of the Air Ambulance at Sherborne, as pictured.
Dramatic new town drugs raid
Exclusive: THIS was the dramatic moment when police in Highbridge this week raided a home in the centre of the town and then arrested a man in connection with drugs charges. Officers forced their way into the flat in Church Street by breaking down a front door and then arrested a man inside.
Berrow dunes day to be held
WILDLIFE enthusiasts are to hold a 'Dunes Discovery Day' at Berrow Nature Reserve to help raise awareness of the importance of the land. A range of activities for all ages will be taking place at the event on Saturday July 18th from 2-5pm including pond dipping, badge making and a guided walk.
