Exclusive: Fears raised for popular Burnham community group’s future

-

The future of one of Burnham-On-Sea’s largest community groups could be in jeopardy if thousands of pounds cannot be found for urgently-needed repairs to the town’s Community Centre.

Burnham’s University of the Third Age has more than 500 members and runs over 40 classes from the centre in Berrow Road.

However, the group’s leaders (pictured) told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week that unless £50,000 is raised for urgently-needed roof repairs at the building, it may be forced to move or even close.

Tony Winterburn, Vice Chairman of the Burnham Community Association, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Without the centre, the U3A would find it very difficult and expensive to function.”

“Sedgemoor District Council seems unable to find enough money to carry out the major repairs that a house of this age requires and so it becomes an entirely self-help project.”

“This centre is of great importance to the people of Burnham-On-Sea and it is essential to raise funds to bring it up to the condition expected in this day and age.”

“The U3A is therefore giving its full support to the Community Association, which is responsible for the care and maintenance of the building.”

“Recently, a new group called the Friends of the Community Association has been formed by the U3A with the purpose of raising money for the maintenance and development of the centre. More than 70 individuals have already come forward and we welcome further supporters,” said Mr Winterburn.

“The Princess Hall simply does not offer the same facilities or space as the Community Centre and is not a viable alternative for the U3A.”

The Community Centre building is in need of repairs costing approximately £300,000, but in the short term the Burnham Community Association urgently needs £50,000 to pay for roof repairs, new floor timbers, the plastering of walls, new ceilings, modern toilets and other essential decoration.

The building dates back to 1837 and is currently used by groups whose subject matter ranges from arts and crafts to exercise and faith groups.

It is also home to Burnham Model Railway Club. The hall was taken over by the Community Association in 1971 and has 60 years left on its full repair lease.

A public meeting of the Friends of the Community Association will be held on Saturday July 25th at 10.30am in the centre when all will be welcome to attend.
