Two people were injured in an early morning crash today (Wednesday) on the M5 motorway near Burnham-On-Sea.

The motorway was fully closed after the collision at 4.55 between junctions 22 for Burnham and 23 for Bridgwater.

“Two fire engines from Bridgwater, two from Burnham-On-Sea and a Heavy Rescue Tender from Taunton were all sent to a report of a collision that had gone across both carriageways,” said a spokesman.

“On arrival, crews confirmed that this collision was involving two vehicles and had initially crashed on the southbound carriageway.”

“One vehicle in the southbound carriageway had no persons trapped, however the vehicle that had overturned onto the northbound carriageway had one person removed by ambulance personnel and one person who was still trapped inside.”

“Crews assisted the ambulance crew in getting the second casualty onto a spinal board before making the vehicles safe. The incident was left in the hands of the Police.”

An ambulance spokesman added: “SWASFT was called at just after 4.50am to M5 junction 22 southbound to a road traffic collision involving two cars.”

“Paramedic teams treated two patients on scene one of which went onto hospital by ambulance for further treatment.”
