Wildlife charity’s anger over badger death in East Huntspill

-

Wildlife carers in the Burnham-On-Sea area have this week expressed their shock after a badger was killed by three men at a sett in East Huntspill.

The trio were spotted digging the badger out of its sett near the Gold Corner Pumping Station on Monday (December 28th).

They were disturbed by another man out walking his dog. He heard the badger screaming with pain as it was killed and saw the men drive away in a white van with green lettering on the side.

The incident was reported to local wildlife rescue charity Secret World and Burnham-On-Sea police.

Secret World’s Pauline Kidner told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We have been made aware that badger persecution is now at the level it was when legislation was brought in to protect the badger in 1992.”

“That was the reason for that legal protection, as it is estimated that more than 10,000 badgers are killed in this way annually.”

“This is the third incident of badger persecution in the area reported to Secret World this month.”

“I can only imagine the pain the badger in this incident must have suffered until it finally died.”

Anyone with information about this incident should contact Secret World on 01278 783250 or police via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
