Hinkley Point B nuclear plant near Burnham set to restart this month

-

Hinkley Point B power station near Burnham-On-Sea will restart power generation on April 18th following a ten-week maintenance shutdown.

The plant, which was taken offline on January 23rd, will be reconnected to the National Grid late on April 18th, its operator EDF Energy said this week.

The energy firm said the reactor was taken out of operation for a £40million maintenance programme that will see an extra 1,000 workers brought in to carry out 12,000 separate pieces of work.

The work included inspections inside the reactor plus the installation of new equipment at the site.

EDF says the work included replacing two large gas circulators which help cool the reactor, as well as replacing blades on the turbine which is used to turn steam into low carbon electricity.

Hinkley Point B’s two reactors generate enough electricity to power around 1.5million homes.
