East Brent’s traditional Harvest Home has been cancelled this week due to its venue being waterlogged.
The popular event, which attracts hundreds of people each year, was due to be held this Friday, August 24th.
Colin Loader, Chairman of the organising committee, confirmed to Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Due to adverse weather conditions, this year’s event has had to be cancelled.”
“The field is water-logged, making it unsafe to erect the marquee as well as for vehicles and guests with tables and chairs liable to sink.”
“This is the first time anyone knows that the weather conditions has caused the cancellation in its 155 years.”
Ticket refunds can be obtained at East Brent Village Hall on 24th August between 12 mid-day and 2pm or by calling 01278 760695.
Colin added: “Our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused.”
The historic event dates back to 1857 and was originally held to celebrate the end of the harvest as an organised event for all farmers and farm workers.
East Brent’s event is the longest-running harvest home in the country with breaks only during the world wars and in 2001 because of the foot and mouth outbreak.
