Members of Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge’s Youth Council have made a special visit to the Town Council’s chambers.

Kate Lawson, who is a town councillor for Burnham and Highbridge, explained the history of the council and the chambers, and invited the youngsters to sit in the councillors’ seats to experience what it’s like to be a councillor.

Meanwhile, The Youth council has received further funding from Somerset County Council to run for another year supported by Andrea White, a project worker from Somerset Rural Youth Project, Cllr Kate Lawson and volunteer Jonathan Smith.

The Youth Council members have started up a drop-in youth club called The Zone and are working on their next projects which include repainting the café area and an Art Project at The Bay Centre. They will aso be involved in a youth day in the summer and a folk music event.

Jonathan has secured funding from 02 which will help with the cost of projects and events. And The Zone youth club has also been given funding to continue for a year.

SRYP Youth and Community project worker Andrea White said: “The support that we have from the Town Council, Kate and Jonathan and the young people has been amazing. This is the first time that I have worked in this area and the community sprit is uplifting as everyone gives as much as they can. I am really looking forward to all the work we will be doing.”

Burnham And Highbridge Youth Council meets on Mondays from 3.30pm-5.30pm at the Bay Centre in Cassis Close when all youngsters aged 11 – 19 are welcome.
