Burnham-On-Sea councillor welcomes £5m road repairs boost

-

A Burnham-On-Sea councillor has welcomed the news that the government has given Somerset County Council an extra £5m to carry out road repairs.

The cash was announced in the Budget, but details have only been confirmed this week.

The extra funding will be used to improve road surfaces in targeted areas, including parts of Burnham and Highbridge where potholes are frequently a problem.

Burnham County Councillor Peter Burridge-Clayton, pictured, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This is excellent news. We have pushed hard for extra funding since the new administration was formed and I am delighted about this success, particularly given the poor state of Somerset’s roads in the past.”

The County Council says it is committed to investment in preventative road maintenance, despite having to save £34m from its budget.

Council Leader Ken Maddock added: “The extra money is welcome and a sign that the Government are listening when we ask for more cash for specific spending projects.”
