Burnham-On-Sea High Street mobile phone shop shuts down

Burnham-On-Sea’s High Street was dealt a blow this week when one of its leading stores closed its doors for the final time.

Disappointed store manager Martin ProwseBridgwater Communications, on the corner of the High Street and Cross Street, shut down just 13 months after coming into Burnham.

Manager Martin Prowse, pictured, told Burnham-On-Sea.com that he was “disappointed and sad” that there had not been more local support.

He explained: “Mobile phone users in Burnham just haven’t supported the store in the numbers we’ve needed.

“Without the full support of the people of Burnham, Highbridge and the surrounding areas it is not possible to sustain our business here in the long term.”

“There’s lots of competition in Weston, Bristol and from the Internet. While customers may find cheaper prices in those places, they just don’t get the same customer service as a local branch.”

He added that the Burnham store hadn’t been making enough sales to continue – and therefore the decision to pull the plug had been taken.

“We haven’t been losing money hand over foot,” he said. “Some months have been good and others have been bad – but it’s just not viable.”

Mr Prowse said he would be working in the Bridgwater branch in future and that the shop in Burnham High Street would stay empty for the forseeable future.

He added that all products bought in Burnham will still be guaranteed for 12 months and can be returned to the Bridgwater store in the event of faults.
