Burnham beach wins ‘Grade A’ status in national awards

-

The quality of Burnham-On-Sea’s beach has been praised this week after it was given an ‘A’ grade in the 2010 Quality Coast Awards.

Keep Britain Tidy, who oversee the annual awards, announced on Thursday (May 13th) that 150 beaches across England had received Blue Flags and Quality Coast Awards in recognition of their high quality environment and facilities.

While Burnham beach has missed out on a Blue Flag award, it has received a sought-after Quality Coast Award.

“The presence of car parks, toilets and information centres, as well as beach cleanliness and water safety, are taken into consideration before awards are granted,” district council spokeswoman Claire Faun told Burnham-On-Sea.com. “We’re delighted that Burnham has achieved this award.”

Keep Britain Tidy’s Phil Barton added: “As more and more people decide to swap trips abroad for the convenience of holidays at home, they are discovering a renewed love for our glorious coastline and quality resorts.”

“The UK’s beaches are fabulous places to visit and that’s official. 71 Blue Flag and 111 Quality Coast Awards demonstrate our beach managers continue to work hard to provide clean and safe beaches for everyone to enjoy.”
