Brean Church boarded up while major £50,000 refurbishment is underway

-

A major £50,000 refurbishment project at Brean’s St Bridget’s Church has begun this month, with the exterior of the building boarded up while work is underway.

Speaking to Burnham-On-Sea.com, Rev Jonathan Philpott said: “Within the Church of England every church building must be inspected by an approved architect every five years, and our latest inspection flagged up that Brean church needs a number of repairs.”

“There are significant problems with the roof and other issues inside that need to be repaired.”

“It’s a major piece of work costing £50,000 that will require the church to be boarded up until May.”

He added: “Scaffolding has gone up around the building and the hoardings are required for health and safety reasons.”

“The graffiti was already on the front boards when it arrived – the contractors say it’s not been added here in Brean.”

“We have been doing a lot of work to pay for the work, and local parishioners have been helping, but we are very keen to receive local financial support as well.”

“Local businesses have all received a letter explaining the work, and a copy for residents has been printed in the local Coastline and Outlook magazines inviting them to help us with donations.“

He added that the church is still open for normal services while the work is carried out.
