Brean holiday park launches new initiative to help protect and boost local wildlife

-

Holiday Resort Unity in Brean has launched a new initiative – ‘The David Bellamy Blooming Marvellous Tree-Mendous Challenge’ – to help protect and boost local wildlife.

The challenge will boost the wildlife value of the trees and woodland at the resort, whilst planting new native trees and managing the existing woodland to make it more valuable for wildlife.

Matthew Breeze, Gardener at Holiday Resort Unity, adds: “We are also giving away a variety of native trees to any group, school or individual that would like them to get started on their own ‘Tree-Mendous Challenge’.”

“These have been lovingly grown from seed and are ready to plant out. We’ll provide care instructions to make sure the tree has the best start in life.”

The David Bellamy Blooming Marvellous Pledge for Nature launched earlier this year and represents an opportunity for holiday parks to show off their green credentials.

It is named after the late botanist and environmental campaigner, who worked tirelessly to get people out into the countryside and enjoy nature.

In order to qualify, a park must show they are:

  • Improving existing habitats for local wildlife
  • Creating new habitats where possible
  • Managing green space in an environmentally friendly way
  • Involving staff and guests in wildlife conservation
  • Engaging with conservation bodies close by.

Having won the David Bellamy Gold Conservation Award consistently for years, the site has set ambitious new environmental goals under the scheme.

Holiday Resort Unity has been working to create habitats across their resorts that play host to an array of wildlife, such as beehives, bat-boxes and bird-boxes, and that help encourage biodiversity.

Matthew adds: “Our wildlife and environment are important to us. Without the care and consideration of both, we wouldn’t be able to provide holiday-makers with scenic settings and lush grounds to enjoy their holidays on.”

As part of this challenge, Holiday Resort Unity is also giving away a variety of native trees to any group, school or individual that would like them to get started on their own Tree-Mendous Challenge.

These have all lovingly been grown from seed and are ready to plant out. They will also provide care instructions to make sure your tree has the best start in life.

They have almost 300 trees to give away ranging from Pinus sylvestris (Pine trees) , alnus glutinosa ( Black alder), acer campestre  (field maple) and sorbus aucuparia (Mountain ash)’
