Last-minute hitch fails to mar popular 2005 Brent Knoll Run

A last-minute hitch failed to mar the popular Brent Knoll Run on Sunday, when 92 runners took part in the gruelling race from Burnham to the top of the Knoll and back.

Runners taking part in the 2005 Brent Knoll RunOrganiser Brian Beale of Burnham Harriers said extra marshals were drafted in after the signs used to mark the course could not be accessed at King Alfred Sports Club.

“We did have a slight hitch,” he said. “The signs were all locked away after a recent move and the club that now owns them was away in Stoke-On-Trent at the weekend.”

“We therefore had to put in place some alternative arrangements pretty quickly and some other signs were loaned to us by Quantock Harriers. We also used an extra six marshals alongside the normal 10 to ensure the course was fully marked,” added Brian.

Brent KnollMuch to his relief, the event went like clockwork. Despite a cool northerly breeze, the runners enjoyed “near perfect” conditions with a dry course. This was reflected in the high number of finishers this year.

The 5.5 mile Brent Knoll Run has been held for more than 20 years, having originally been started as a small race attached to the village’s summer fete. Later, Burnham Harriers took over it and moved it to the winter to make it more competitive.

The event starts at Burnham’s BASC ground in Stoddens Road and goes cross-country to the summit of Brent Knoll and back. Over the years, the course has changed slightly after various alterations to footpaths along the route, but the course remains popular with runners.
