BT plans to remove one of Burnham-On-Sea’s final remaining phone boxes

-

One of the final phone boxes in Burnham-On-Sea could be removed under proposals from BT.

The company is carrying out a public consultation on the future of the kiosk at the northern end of Burnham-On-Sea seafront, pictured here.

Burnham and Highbridge Town Council has been asked by Somerset Council to consider a consultation letter regarding the BT Payphone Programme for removal of the public payphone and phone kiosk adjacent to Seaview Road on The Esplanade.

The company says it is not being used enough for it to continue running.

BT adds that 98% of the adult population now uses a mobile phone and there has been a huge decline in the usage of payphones across the UK.

In 2021, we reported here that Burnham and Highbridge councillors had requested that three ‘vital’ BT kiosks in Princess Street, Pier Street and Seaview Road be saved from removal. The one in Princess Street was later removed, while the Pier Street and Seaview Road boxes remain.

Any comments on the proposed removal of the seafront kiosk should be sent to the planning department at Somerset Council.
