Police have issued an appeal for information after thousands of pounds worth of valuables were stolen in a break-in at Burnham-On-Sea’s football club, Burnham United AFC, this week.

Thieves broke into the club’s building in Cassis Close, stealing valuable items and cash – and leaving a trail of damage.

The raid took place at around 5.30am on Tuesday morning (December 19th) when the intruders gained access through the rear of the building.

A club spokesman said: “The culprits caused significant damage to the shutter on the back door to get into the club.”

“They stole a Philips 54-inch TV, a Sharp 56-inch TV, smashed both the jukebox and fruit machine, taking money from inside, emptied the float from the till as well as the penny jar.”

“It is gutting that anyone could do this to the club and it is a kick in the teeth to all the volunteers who give up their time to run it.”

Matt Counsell, Chairman, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are completely gutted that this has happened.”

“The support we’ve received locally and from right across the south west has just been amazing since the break-in, with messages from as far afield as Newquay and Lyme Regis. We will get everything sorted and will come back stronger than ever.”

Burnham’s Mayor Cllr Bill Hancock told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I’m really saddened and shocked to hear this news, especially at a time of the year that should be the season of goodwill. I hope the culprits are quickly found.”

Oliver Taylor, who is a member of the club, added on social media: “Nothing can break the spirit and commitment of the people at BUFC. What doesn’t kill us will only make us stronger.”

Anyone with information regarding the incident should contact Burnham-On-Sea Police on 101, quoting crime reference number 5217288797.

A large screen television attached to the wall of the clubhouse was among the items stolen – with only the bracket remaining
