Plans for 29 new flats at former Highbridge Canal House site unveiled

-

Plans to turn Highbridge’s former Canal House site into a modern new development of 29 flats have been unveiled this week.

Property developer Toni Hammick discussed her plans for the high-profile site, next to the Church Street roundabout, with town councillors this week.

“This site has been a thorn in Highbridge’s side for a long time,” she said. “Now, we have new plans to develop the site.”

She explained that while permission was granted in 2010 for a mixed-use development of 14 flats and shops, that scheme was “commercially unworkable as there wasn’t the footfall.”

New plans have therefore been drawn up without shops and a flats-only development.

The plans, which are due to be formally submitted in March, feature a development of 29 one and two-bed flats over three stories with underground parking for 31 vehicles.

Cllr Andy Brewer said: “I understand the commercial issue, but that shouldn’t be used to cram in as much as possible.”

Local resident David Barrett expressed concern about parking and access to his neighbouring property, but Toni Hammick said this had been adressed.
