The final countdown is underway for the Highbridge and Burnham-On-Sea Carnival which is set to take place on Monday (November 5th).

The carts arrived from the Bridgwater Carnival last night and are now parked up along Burnham’s Queen’s Drive and the Frank Foley Parkway as road closures are in operation.

Forcecasters say light cloud and a gentle breeze are expected for Monday’s Burnham carnival, with a low chance of rain.

Organisers say 88 entries will be taking part – and the Carnival is once again set to be a dazzling event, drawing big crowds of up to 30,000 people into Burnham-On-Sea.

The procession will start at 7.30pm in Love Lane before wending its way along Manor Road, Victoria Street and the High Street, coming to an end in Marine Drive.

On Sunday November 4th, Burnham will host its usual seafront fireworks display, which this year starts at 6.30pm.

Last year’s carnival had a bumper year for fundraising, raising a total of £13,430 – much of which goes to support local groups and organisations – and organisers say they hope visitors will again dig deep.

The trophies for the event have gone on display in the window of Scotts Furnishings in Burnham’s Victoria Street and will be there until carnival day.

One new trophy this year will be the ‘Big D Cup’, which is named in memory of Andrew White, a former member of Hillview and Marketeers Carnival Clubs.

Phil New, Burnham and Highbridge Carnival Chairman, said: “Andrew died earlier this year at age 42 and was a great friend and carnivalite. So my wife and I have donated a cup in his honour. He was a big bloke, hence the name, and it will be awarded for first place in technical achievement.”

Road closures will start on Saturday November 3rd at 9pm when Queen’s Drive and part of The Frank Foley Parkway are closed to allow the entries to arrive from Bridgwater Carnival.

On Monday November 5th, the first road to close will be the Tesco end of The Frank Foley Parkway. Most other roads will stay open until as close to 6.30pm as possible.
