Pavement campaigners step up protest with march through Berrow

-

This was the scene in Berrow this morning (Saturday, September 26th) when a large crowd of residents stepped up their long-running campaign to get a pavement introduced along Coast Road.

Berrow’s Local Action Team organised the protest in order to put pressure onto Somerset County Council to re-consider its decision not to fund a pathway along the busy road through the village.

The march, involving almost 50 residents, was held amid fresh hopes that Somerset County Council under its new Conservative-led management, will re-consider its decision not to introduce a pavement along the busy road – as first reported here.

Long queues of traffic backed up at either end of Saturday’s march, but protesters received mainly positive support from drivers. Leaflets were also handed out to motorists explaining why the march was being held.

“A few minutes of delays now for our protest are far better than several hours for a road closure after a serious accident,” said Ken May, Chairman of the Local Action Team.

He added: “We are delighted with how the latest march went and will be holding a follow-up protest on Saturday 24th October, starting 11am at Berrow Church.”
