Trapped couple rescued from car in roadside ditch at Brean

-

An elderly couple was left “shaken” after being trapped in this car in a water-filled ditch at Brean on Wednesday afternoon (December 16th).

Five fire crews, police and an ambulance crew were sent to the Weston Road at mid-day after the Toyota Yaris slid into the roadside ditch, as pictured here.

The shocked occupants of the vehicle had raised the alarm using a mobile phone, but were still trapped inside for over 40 minutes.

Ambulance spokesman Dave Rogers told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The elderly couple were treated at the scene by the ambulance crew and then taken to Burnham Hospital for a check-over but were not seriously injured.”

One fire crew from Burnham, plus others from Glastonbury, Street, Bridgwater and Weston were called to the incident amid initial serious concern for the couple’s welfare.

The crews used tools to remove a strip of hedgerow, and at 12.38pm the couple were safely released from the vehicle.

Police spokesman Simon Whitby said the road was temporarily closed while emergency services were at the scene. “The vehicle was lifted out of the ditch at around 2.15pm when the road fully re-opened,” he added.
