Fresh safety concerns have been raised this week after this dramatic crash at a blackspot near Burnham-On-Sea.

The occupants of the vehicle had a lucky escape when their car left the road and ended up on its side in a water-filled ditch on Sunday morning.

The sharp bend in Burnham Moor Lane has seen several similar accidents in recent years, prompting a re-think on safety.

Emergency services were called to the accident at 10.20am and found the Ford Fiesta resting on its side. There were no injuries.

A police spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com that the shaken occupants had managed to scramble free without serious injuries.

Police diverted traffic around the scene until a recovery truck managed to haul the car from its resting place.

One nearby resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “This corner is a sharp bend and there are not nearly enough warning signs as you approach it. We see several accidents a year here where drivers have seen the bend too late.”

Richard Young, the Clerk of Burnham Without Parish Council, which oversees the area, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are keen to see safety maintained on all our local roads. We will look at the safety of this stretch again. I am not sure what changes can be made to make it safer.”
