Crime rates in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge have tumbled over the past year, according to new figures released by local police this week.

Burglaries from dwellings have fallen by 19% to 21 cases over the past year, while other burglaries are down 32% to 48 cases.

The biggest decrease is in incidents of anti-social behaviour, which are down a huge 59.4% to 139 cases. Incidents of criminal damage have fallen 23% to 57 cases.

Burnham-On-Sea Police Neighbourhood Beat Manager Ryan Dinham, pictured below, speaking at Monday’s Annual Town Council Meeting, said: “We are pleased with the figures.”

He added: “A lot of initiatives are underway to further reduce the figures. We have 22 no cold calling zones in Burnham and Highbridge and are still expanding these, with Gore Road the next planned new zone.”

“Manor Gardens is always a ‘hot potato’ and we do patrol it frequently. We have used Section 35 dispersal orders there to move people on successfully. There was a spike of incidents over Easter, which generally happens. We frequently use the CCTV and liaise with Sedgemoor District Council on that.”

He added that Burnham-On-Sea Police have are also been carrying out speed checks in Love Lane and Marine Drive “targeting people in the rush hour and trying to educate them about speeding.”
