Highbridge solicitor urges local law students to work in local area

A Highbridge solicitor has been passing on tips and advice to local children about how to pursue a legal career.

David Sinclair of Gould and Swayne Solicitors in Highbridge (pictured) was invited by King Alfred School to give Year 10 students several talks during the school’s annual careers day.

“You don’t have to be an academic to work in law,” he said. “On a day to day level, practical skills like communication and problem-solving go a long way.”

He also said that students might do better to stay in Somerset than head for a career in London. “You don’t have to work for a big firm in the City. Working for a smaller firm in your local community is very worthwhile and rewarding. Law is not about big salaries and fast cars but, like any job, if you work hard and progress you will be paid well.”

The students also took part in a court role play which aimed to show how enjoyable legal careers can be.

“Law is about real people and real problems – it’s not boring, doesn’t involve lots of reading, and doesn’t always involve wearing a wig and going to court,” said David.
