Dog almost gets swept away in Burnham-On-Sea beach drama

-

Rescue crews were called to Burnham-On-Sea’s beach on Saturday morning (November 29th) amid concerns for a dog and its owner.

A black labrador was spotted struggling in the sea several hundred metres from the shore, getting swept upstream along the estuary by the swift incoming tide.

A beach walker alerted Coastguards, and a team from Burnham Coastguard and BARB were called to the scene.

They ensured the dog owner did not put himself in difficulty to reach the dog, which was safely returned to the beach south of the jetty.

Dog walker John Payne said: “Oscar, our labrador, loves the water and it was concerning when he started to get swept along the estuary.”

“I’m relieved he safely returned to the beach – the quick response from the Coastguard and BARB was superb.”
