Burnham-On-Sea fire crews tackle blaze at landfill waste site

-

Firefighters from Burnham-On-Sea joined fire crews from across the area in tackling a fire at a waste landfill site on Thursday evening (November 11th).

Crews were initially called to the Walpole Landfill site, near East Huntspill, at 4.20pm on Thursday afternoon – but their work was hampered by strong winds, which spread the blaze.

Two fire engines were initially called to the incident and it was established that there was a deep-seated fire within 2,000 tonnes of garden waste.

On site staff were employed with mechanical diggers to move waste to create a fire break to contain the fire.

A third fire engine from Bridgwater was mobilised for more lighting at the incident and to provide light portable pumps.

Firefighters used breathing apparatus and hose reel jets to tackle the fire, as pictured above.

Relief crews from Burnham-On-Sea and Street were sent during the night and work continued until the early hours of this morning when the fire was finally extinguised and duty of care was left with the site manager.
