An investigation is underway into the cause of a fire in Burnham-On-Sea town centre last night (Sunday) in which firefighters rescued two people from a block of flats.

College Street and John Street were sealed off for three hours while firefighters and police were at the scene of the blaze in College Street, which started at 7pm.

A fire spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Two fire appliances from Burnham were initially sent to reports of an alarm sounding in the property in College Street. On their arrival, crews confirmed a fire and requested a further three appliances from Bridgwater and Cheddar, plus Incident Command Units from Street and Yeovil.”

“The fire involved a cupboard in a communal stairwell. The communal staircase was 70% damaged by smoke. Forced entry was made to three flats and two persons were rescued by fire service personnel. Police also attended and the cause of the fire is being investigated.”

A police spokeswoman added that two men had been treated for smoke inhalation, with neither requiring hospital treatment. Western Power and the gas board attended the scene to isolate supplies.
