Burnham-On-Sea Food Festival announces bursary winners

-

A Berrow meat company is one of the two winners of a new bursary scheme being run by the organisers of Burnham-On-Sea’s Food & Drink Festival.

The two winners are beef meat box scheme Berrow Beef and the fundraising arm of St Margaret’s Hospice. Both will be featured at the next Food Festival on October 25th.

Sarah Welland of Berrow Beef said: “We are thrilled to have been awarded a bursary. We hope it will provide us with an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of our beef within the local market. The food festival is well renowned locally, and we are very excited being part of its this October.”

Festival Director Sarah Milner Simonds said: “Through the Food & Drink festival we have shown our commitment to supporting local traders to build sustainable businesses and now we want to help new businesses make their first steps into trading. We recognise we have an opportunity to assist in developing the skills, abilities and knowledge of all food and drink producers.”

The second beneficiary, St Margaret’s Hospice, will be selling vintage kitchenalia that they have been collecting all summer especially for the show. Expect lots of enamel ware, tea sets and decanters.

Fellow Festival Director Beverley Milner Simonds continued: “The scheme is designed to encourage business start-up and self-employment within Somerset. Berrow Beef will be in Victoria Street and the hospice in College Street, we hope all visitors to the festival give them encouragement and some business.”

One of last year’s benefactors, The Chilli Alchemist, Jay Webley said: “I was so pleased to be offered a bursary from the Food & Drink Festival. It provided me with an opportunity to start building my customer base. Having invested heavily, the financial respite was most welcome and a brilliant idea that should be encouraged & adopted by other event organisers. I had a great day trading at last year’s festival; the feedback from customers was great and the support from other traders really encouraged me.”

The discretionary bursary is for food and drink producers who have not engaged in retail trade before. More information on all the traders is on the festival website.
