The fourth and final day of the Instrumental Section of Highbridge Festival was rounded off by an outstanding performance by the King Alfred Concert Band, which earned them an Honours mark from the adjudicator Elizabeth Brazier. Earlier in the day, she praised the teachers who had prepared their school choirs and orchestra for The Festival and said that they were an asset to their schools. She told the children of Churchfield School how lucky they were to have a composer in their school. Mark First School won Gold & Silver medals for their singing, as did Young Churchfield Voices. In the younger age group, Burnham Infants gained a distinction and gold medal for their performance. St Joseph’s Orchestra played during the morning much to the enjoyment of the audience. A highlight of the day were three performances by violinist, Poppy McGhee who was rewarded with two honours marks, one for an accompanied solo and the other, which had an even higher mark, for her violin recital. “You will go far,” said Ms Brazier when she talked to Poppy about her playing.

The second day of the Music Section of Highbridge Festival was a very lively one with entrants receiving lots of compliments for their playing. A large number of entrants were commended or received distinctions for their performances. The first Honours marks in this year’s Festival were also awarded today to two soloists and one group.
During the morning recorder groups from Brent Knoll, St Joseph’s Catholic Primary & Bridgwater Academy competed against each other with barely a mark to separate them when the medals were awarded. Hutton Taiko, a school drumming group, took to the stage mid-morning and wowed the audience with their rhythmical performance. The day was rounded off by two accomplished multi-discipline performances, which really excited the adjudicator and royally entertained the audience. BEES, who gained an Honours mark, performed a medley of songs from CATS, whilst Burnham Youth Choir shared their ‘mash-up’ of songs from Joseph & The Technicolour Dreamcoat.

The opening day of the Music Section of Highbridge Festival of The Arts saw pianists take centre stage in Highbridge Community Hall. The adjudicator, Elizabeth Brazier, was impressed with the number of pianists playing during the day, commenting: “Piano playing is alive and well in Highbridge!” The day sessions gave young and new pianists opportunities to play in public, many for the first time.

One of the highlights was the Elena Cobb Duet Class, where William, Seth, Francesca, Isabelle, Frazier & William played duets with their teacher. Not only were they competing for a gold medal but also a prize of £50, which was won by William Gardner. Shapwick School Choir enthused the audience with their rendition of ‘When The Saints’ and achieved a distinction mark from the adjudicator, who encouraged them to sing again with the audience joining in.
The audience for the evening session were regaled with performances by slightly older and more experienced pianists, as well as another Elena Cobb Class for solo beginners and early intermediate players, which was won by Hannah Coulton.

Speech and Drama results – Tuesday 6th March 2018

The second day of the Speech & Drama Section saw 99 primary aged children take to the stage to recite poems they had learnt by heart. Dawn Rose, Speech & Drama Secretary, said: “The children should be very proud of themselves for braving the stage and their marks were very good.” Children from Berrow School arrived in their Book Day outfits, as the snow had postponed the event last week, which added more excitement to their performances. Later, Year 3 of St Joseph’s School wowed the audience with their ‘See What I Can Do’ entry about the body, gaining one of the highest marks of the day and a distinction. The Festival is delighted that so many children took part in the Speech & Drama Section this year and hope that their performances will encourage them to take part again next year.

Speech and Drama results – Monday 5th March 2018

Highbridge Festival of The Arts got off to a great start with super choral speaking performances from five local schools. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience of taking to the stage at The Princess Theatre in Burnham and were warmly applauded by the audience. Later in the day the audience were entertained by solo performances by children and adults who recited poems, read prose extracts and delivered monologues. Sam Nicol was delighted to achieve Honours and a gold medal for her reading of a poem by Andrea Shavick. The first day of the Festival was rounded off by a variety of pantomime performances, devised dramas and original short stories, which showcased the writing and acting talents of some of our local residents.
