A new project to bring an ice rink to Burnham-On-Sea later this year has been launched this week – with residents being encouraged to get involved.

The project is being led by a new group of people from the Burnham area who aim to introduce various events in the town to make it an enjoyable, family shopping experience for all ages.

The group, called BEST (Burnham Events Social Team), wants to work with the tourism industry, the Town Centre Manager, Burnham Chamber of Trade and local authorities to identify dates, locations, and activities where Burnham could generate additional interest and bring shoppers to the area.

The group of volunteers is made up of traders and local residents who are looking for ways to improve the services currently provided by introducing activities to entertain customers and their families by having periodic, outdoor events.

The Chairperson of the group is Kathy Jones from The Toycupboard in Pier Street, Burnham and a committee has been formed to manage the projected events.

She told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Our main theme is targeted at this Christmas when we would like to co-ordinate the late night shopping and some Christmas stalls. We are thinking about an ‘ice skating rink’, but we need funds to meet the costs for some of these events.”

The group is keen for local people to get involved by fundraising and volunteering to enable an ice rink to come to Burnham town centre over the Christmas period during December.

“Ideas have been discussed on how to raise funds whilst having an event and these include a sponsored Walk on the Beach in July, Quiz Nights and a ‘Comedy/Music’ evening on 28th September 2015 at the Princess Theatre. We will also be applying for other funding from various sources.”

Kathy added: “We believe there is a need to offer visitors and locals something different to compete with other towns. The group have a written a constitution setting out our aims and objectives with what we want to achieve. I speak to various people who have ideas on how things could be improved in the town and some sound viable.”

“I am now asking anyone who thinks they can help us to contact me in the shop and we will discuss it, or they can contact me on my mobile 07596 152092 or by email at musicmad2004@yahoo.co.uk.”

“With local people voicing their ideas and opinion, I am sure we can do things to improve our town.”
