Burnham MP invites Jeremy Corbyn to town Armed Forces Day parade

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s MP has invited Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn to attend today’s Armed Forces parade in the town before he heads onto Glastonbury Festival’s Pyramid stage.

MP James Heappey has invited the Labour leader to leave Worthy Farm and join him at Burnham-On-Sea’s parade, as previewed here.

The invite comes after Mr Corbyn was criticised by some for choosing to speak on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival instead of participating at a national Armed Forces Day event in Liverpool.

In a letter to Mr Corbyn on Parliamentary paper, Mr Heappey advises him that he has time to attend the parade in Burnham before returning for his appearance at the festival.

The MP writes: “I’m concerned that Jeremy Corbyn has chosen not to be in Liverpool with our Prime Minister and Royal Family to celebrate the work of our Armed Forces.”

“Going to Liverpool would have meant he’d miss Craig David but he could easily have been back in Somerset in time for Katy Perry.”

“Instead he’s put politicking on the Pyramid Stage ahead of his responsibilities as the leader of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition.”

His letter said: “I read with some alarm that your visit to the Glastonbury Festival in my constituency has stopped you from attending the National Armed Forces Day commemorations in Liverpool.”

“I know that you would not have chosen to put a political opportunity at Glastonbury ahead of our nation’s Armed Forces and veterans and that you must have felt very uneasy about the scheduling decisions presumably taken by your staff.”

“So may I invite you to join me and my fellow veterans at the Burnham-On-Sea Armed Forces Day Parade at 12.30pm.”
