Local political candidates from the UK’s five leading parties took part in a Question Time style debate in Highbridge this week.

King Alfred School’s Sixth Form Committee hosted the annual event where they quizzed the politicians, pictured above, on a number of hot topics.

The panellists included Tessa Munt MP (Lib Dem), Steve Crowther (Chairman of UKIP), James Heappey (parliamentary candidate for the Conservative Party), Chris Inchley (parliamentary candidate for the Labour Party) and Alex Lawrie (Green Party).

The debate was very ably chaired by Taggy Parrott and Sam Harkness of Year 13 and all those present said the event had compared well to the BBC version but with the voices of young voters emphasised.

Meanwhile, the sixth formers returned to school following their AS exams last week and enjoyed a few days of ‘enrichment’ before the start of their A2 programme.

The students completed the Personal Development and Enterprise Education programme with the Royal Corps of Signals which included the refinement of transferable skills such as problem solving and communication; a particular highlight was a 2.5km timed run that all students completed within the time.

Students also benefitted from a visit by Sheffield University who led workshops on applying to university, writing personal statements and research skills for the Extended Project Qualification.
