A team of pupils from King Alfred School’s Science and Engineering Club in Highbridge took part in an unusual challenge this week when they competed to create a device capable of moving one litre of water in a minute.
The six Year 8 pupils travelled to Chilton Trinity to compete against five other local schools and a staff team in the Faraday Engineering Challenge, which they won.
“The challenge was to design and make in limited time and on a limited budget, a device to move one litre of water in one minute.
Marks were awarded for ideas, design development, teamwork, a video, a presentation and the performance of the device,” science school teacher Ian Elenor told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
The King Alfred team of Alice Dymond, Heather Duddy, Daniel Butt, Rachael Butler, Agatha Parrot and Chloe Virgo scored 168 points out of 200 and therefore finished in joint first place.
However, their device cost less so they were awarded the top prize – their pump actually moved 2.3 litres in a minute.
They received a glass trophy to celebrate their award, along with a USB bracelet each and a £250 voucher for new science equipment at the school.
