Burnham-On-Sea’s iconic beach lighthouse set for overhaul in 2017

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s iconic beach lighthouse is to get a major makeover next year, it’s been confirmed this week.

Several residents have got in touch with Burnham-On-Sea.com regarding the condition of the lighthouse, which has paint peeling from its roof and sides, and rust on it legs, as pictured here.

“It’s a wonderful old building that’s showing its age – it needs some care and attention,” said Margaret Grant.

“It’s such a well-known building that’s symbolic of Burnham, so I hope the council will go ahead with the repairs as quickly as possible.”

Sedgemoor District Council says the building is on its planned maintenance programme to be repainted, with the next work scheduled for 2017.

“We have tried to have it cleaned recently with a wash-and-reach system but it needs to be scaffolded to do it properly,” explained council spokeswoman Claire Faun.

“Its exterior was last decorated in 2010 using a specialist paint that’s well suited to a marine environment and exposure to salty air, spray and windy conditions.”

She added: “The materials, special equipment needed for working on soft sand, and labour cost in the region of £14,500 when it was last done.”
