M5 southbound re-opens after lorry crash that caused travel chaos

-

The southbound M5 motorway has fully re-opened following a collision between two lorries that shut it on Wednesday morning.

The crash happened on the southbound carriageway, between junction 24 at Bridgwater and junction 25 at Taunton, at 3.15am.

A broken down lorry on the hard shoulder was struck by another lorry which then overturned and ended up completely blocking the carriageway, as pictured here.

Diversions were put in place along the A38 with long delays faced by motorists throughout the day. One lane was opened at lunchtime on Wednesday, but there were still queues through the area.

The two remaining lanes were later opened, said the Highways Agency.

Fire crews had spent almost two hours releasing the driver of one of the lorries, who was taken to Musgrove Park Hospital with serious arm injuries.
