A man sadly died in a fire at a flat in Highbridge town centre on Friday morning (November 8th), Police have confirmed.

Four fire crews were called to a blaze at the rear of a commercial property in Market Street shortly after 11am, as pictured here.

A Police spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We were called to reports of a property fire in Market Street in Highbridge this morning about 11.15am.”

“The occupant of the flat – a man – has sadly died. We are treating the death as unexplained and enquiries into the incident continue.”

“Roads in the area have been closed to allow the emergency services to deal with the fire.”

A fire service spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Two fire engines from Burnham-On-Sea, plus one from Bridgwater and one from Taunton, were sent to a report of smoke issuing from a domestic property.”

“On arrival crews confirmed that there was a fire at the rear of the property in a storage area that had spread to the property.”

“Crews extinguished the fire and then dealt with some slight smoke logging in the property.”

Police have closed off Market Street and traffic is being diverted around the area.
