Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge’s Mayor and Mayoress have this week been re-elected by councillors for a second year.

At a Town Council meeting last night (Tuesday, May 1st), Bill Hancock and his wife Frances were unanimously elected by town councillors.

Cllr Hancock was proposed as Mayor by Cllr Peter Clayton, who said: “Bill has done a terrific job as Mayor in his first year – he and Frances are tremendous for our towns.” The motion was seconded by Cllr Nick Tolley and councillors all voted in favour.

The newly re-elected Mayor said: “Thank you for supporting us. We have had a marvellous first year and will do our best for you this coming year.”

Cllr Peter Clayton was elected Deputy Mayor while Cllr Andy Brewer will continue as the Second Deputy Mayor. The council’s committees are unchanged.

The Mayor thanked his deputies, Cadet Rebecca Fear, Mayor’s Chaplain Rev Sharon Crossman, and Town Clerk Tatiana Cant, Deputy Clerk Lorna Williams, assistant Lorna Brewer and accounts Sally Jones.

The new Mayor and Mayoress are due to announce their new appointment for Mayor’s Cadet in the coming weeks, saying they intend to choose a youngster from the Burnham and Highbridge air cadets in honour of the RAF’s 100-year anniversary.

Bill Hancock, 74, is a cattle farmer who lives at The Oaktree in Highbridge. He has been a Highbridge town councillor for seven years, representing the Highbridge ward. Frances, 70, was born in Isleport Road, Highbridge and has always lived in the town.
