Burnham-On-Sea Mayor issues 2005 Christmas message

Burnham-On-Sea’s Mayor, Cllr Eric Gill, has issued his annual Christmas message for residents in the town. He reviews the highlights of the year in the town and looks forward to 2006…

“At this time of year it seems to be the vogue to look back and remember the highs (and lows) of preceding months. There have certainly been some ‘highs’ in my estimation – the Frank Foley Statue in Highbridge (a magnificent memorial), the Esplanade Lighting, the Marine Cove developments – and even some extra parking spaces!”

“My focus is for the future, however, and I would rather look ahead and dedicate our efforts to putting Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge even more on the tourist map, to encourage more short and long-term visitors, and yet always to remember that the people who really do matter are those who live and work in our towns.”

“I am firmly of the belief that we live in a marvellous part of the world and I am resolved to try and maintain and enhance it for all. There are so many schemes for redevelopment and enhancement in the pipeline which will unfold in the not too distant future and I think it is fair to say that Burnham and Highbridge are on the up.”

“A large part of what makes the place special is its community spirit – yes, I know we have a few wingers and moaners – the ‘can’t do’s’ – for whom noting can ever be right but on the other hand we have, and much more importantly, the majority – the ‘can do’s’. I am impressed by the huge army of volunteers from all walks of life who make enormous efforts to improve life for others. I salute you all.”

“We are blesssed with so many – just look at the list of the clubs, societies etc in the residents guide – but I would specially commend all those who work with and on behalf of our young people – the seedcorn of our future.”

“I am inordinately proud and privileged to be your Mayor and my wife and I wish each and everyone of you a very happy Christmas. We hope that 2006 will be a very good year for us all.”
