New appeal to find owner of mystery fishing boat found washed up on Stert Island

-

Sedgemoor District Council has issued an appeal to find the mystery owner of an empty fishing boat found washed up on Stert Island last week.

As Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported here, Burnham Coastguards and an RNLI lifeboat crew were called out on Tuesday October 15th to investigate the beached vessel, after it was spotted washed up on the eastern side of the island opposite Burnham-On-Sea, as pictured below. The RNLI later towed the boat to Burnham Sailing Club’s pontoons.

Council spokeswoman Claire Faun told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “A small wooden boat was recovered from Stert Island by the RNLI and Sedgemoor District Council, as the Port Authority, and we are looking for its owners so that it can be returned.”

“It is thought that it was originally on the River Brue before floating to Stert Island and SDC need to try to identify the owner for them to reclaim and collect it, otherwise it will go to the boatyard in the sky!”

“Its owners have until November 1st to claim it, otherwise it will be disposed of. It is not in particularly good condition and the suspicion is that it is the marine equivalent of fly-tipping, but SDC are endeavouring to contact its owner before disposal. The registration number is no longer valid.”

If anyone has any information as it its owners, contact Harbour.master@sedgemoor.gov.uk or call 0300 303 7799.
