Dozens of Highbridge residents joined a Remembrance Day ceremony at the town’s War Memorial on Sunday.

A parade of local youth groups took place through the town to St John’s Church, where a Remembrance service was led by Rev Sharon Crossman.

After the service, Highbridge’s MP James Heappey and Mayor, Cllr Bill Hancock, joined other local councillors and dignitaries in laying wreaths at Highbridge War Memorial.

The Last Post was played by Highbridge trumpet player Francis Fear, followed by the customary two minutes silence.

Among the groups laying wreaths were Highbridge Scouts, Guides, Brownies, Rainbows and Cubs, St John Ambulance Badgers, plus local Army and Sea Cadets.

Members of the town’s police force, Royal British Legion, Highbridge Chamber of Trade and the town’s former MP Tessa Munt also paid their respects.

Mayor Bill Hancock told Burnham-On-Sea.com afterwards: “It was fantastic to see such a great turnout in Highbridge, especially from young people.”

“It was a moving service and the poppy display inside the church made by Churchfield School pupils was really outstanding.”
