Prison cells come back to use at Burnham-On-Sea Police Station
Police in Burnham-On-Sea will soon be keeping prisoners under lock and key in cells at the town’s police station.
Since the end of 2002 all prisoners have been taken to Bridgwater Police Station, but in a bid to save officer’s time and deal with low level criminal suspects the Burnham cells will soon be used once again.
Burnham sector deputy PS Roger Tolley said: “The provision of the cells at both locations will enable officers to deal with some detainees here, rather than travelling to Bridgwater all the time.”
“Before the cells were taken out of commission approximately 150 persons were dealt with at Burnham in 2002.”
He added: “The quicker the detainee is dealt with means the sooner the officers are able to return to their patrols in the town.”
“There will also be less inconvenience caused to persons under investigation, not having to travel to Bridgwater each time they are required to answer bail.”
Work on the Burnham-On-Sea cells has already begun and they are expected to be back in full use by the end of August.
