Cider farm near Burnham wins two awards for ‘best drink in Somerset’

-

A cider maker near Burnham-On-Sea is celebrating a double dose of success this week.

Rich’s Cider Farm in Watchfield has won the coveted Best Drink award at the Somerset Life Food and Drink Awards – and the same title at Weston Food Festival.

Owner Jan Scott and her son George, pictured, attended a ceremony near Bridgwater on Friday where the news was announced.

She told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We could hardly believe it when it was announced that our product had won best drink product of 2015. We really are thrilled because we were up against strong competition from Thatchers Cider and Hullabaloo. We are over the moon to have won – it’s a real feather in our cap.”

The cider farm’s ‘Legbender’ brand was praised by a panel of judges after initially being nominated by the public.

Jan added: “We are a family-run cider farm and to beat the big names to this award really is fantastic.”

The team from Rich’s Cider also won the best drink title at this month’s Weston Food Festival awards, beating several big regional producers.

Cider has been produced at Rich’s Cider Farm at Watchfield for over 60 years. There have been many changes since Jan’s late father, Gordon, started pressing cider apples although the production of the juice is still traditional.
